A few of my favourite things…

The conference is only two weeks away which means it’s time to tout our host city.

Someone once said that the difference between Toronto and Vancouver was that Vancouver’s beauty is in your face while Toronto’s is hidden and a delight to discover.

While it’s true that Vancouver’s beauty is right in front of you from the moment you arrive, the city has many gems worth discovering.

Here are some of my favourites.

The best coffee: Any Caffe Artigiano. The busiest location is the one at Hornby just below West Georgia but there are a number of Artigianos around town.

The best fish and chips: Go Fish on the False Creek seawall between the Burrard and Granville Street bridges.

The best meal deal in town: The bento box at Sun Sushi on West 10th between Sasamat and Collingwood. For $5.95 all day, you get teriyaki, tempura, six California rolls, and salad. The restaurant’s spotless and the food is fresh and delicious.

The best patio: You can choose the more upscale Sylvia Hotel or the Jericho Sailing Club for a drink and the sunset.

The best transit: The brightly coloured little commuter ferries that crisscross False Creek. They make me think of “Timmy the Tugboat.” The longest trip is the one from Granville Island to Science World.

The best forest walk: Pacific Spirit Park near UBC is a wonderful place to walk that fills me with awe each time.

I’ve shared mine, now will you share yours?

One of my favourite spots is a French restaurant called Café Salade de Fruits (http://www.saladedefruits.com) in South Granville. It’s a wonderful, cozy spot and also features a table d’hote 3-course experience for $21.99. Bon appétit!

My daughter and I went rode bikes around the Seawall. We watched a huge cargo ship go under Lions Gate bridge (she was certain it was too tall) and got ice cream at 2nd Beach. There’s a couple of bike rental shops across the street from the hotel.

Best place to find fun funky clothes - Spank on Granville. Just down the street is my favourite place to have breakfast - The Templeton (1087 Granville) - but get there early.

For art lovers - the Vancouver Art Gallery also has a Rembrandt exhibit running throughout the summer - find details at http://tinyurl.com/amypgo
